The first-year Folsom Lake College women’s volleyball team made their season debut on Saturday at the Modesto Tournament and turned in two dominant performances as they defeated both Simpson University JV and Columbia College in straight sets. In their opening match against Simpson, the Falcons were led by outside hitter Kylie Haverson’s 8 kills and 10 digs as they won 25-11, 25-16, and 25-8. Kate Nicknig and Gwen Hernandez added 7 and 6 kills, respectively. In the afternoon match against Columbia, the Falcons were even more dominant, winning 25-8, 25-5, and 25-9. Hernandez recorded 7 kills, while Emma Flewell was everywhere, tallying 5 kills, 6 digs, and 2 solo blocks. Coach Matt Torrez was pleased with his team’s performance but cautioned against getting too giddy. “It was nice to get the wins, but we’ll see much tougher competition in the Big 8 Conference. We just need to keep improving.”

The Falcons will christen Falcon Gymnasium on Wednesday (Aug 31) when they host the 3-team Folsom Lake Classic Tournament. FLC will play Lassen at 1:00 pm and Ohlone at 5:00 pm. In between, it will be Lassen vs. Ohlone at 3:00. Come check out the exciting action; FLC faculty/staff/students are admitted FREE! General Admission is $5, while senior citizens and non-FLC students are $3.

The FLC women’s soccer team picked up where they left off last year, laying waste to a talented Lassen College team on Saturday night at Falcon Field, 7-0. Just last year Lassen was undefeated in the Golden Valley Conference at 10-0 and went to the CCCAA state playoffs with a 15-6 record. But the Falcons wasted no time showing they mean business in 2016 as sophomore Leily Ghods scored the fastest goal in FLC history when she took a pass from Allie Miller, made one cut and calmly knocked it to the far post in the 27th second of play! It was all Falcons from there, as Ghods scored again in the 7th minute when Keionna Claypoole’s shot rebounded off the Lassen keeper for an easy tap in. Ghods returned the favor in the 15th minute when she found Claypool open near the goal for a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Paty Navarro got in on the action in the 39th minute when she juked and jived her way past a stunned defender, then sent it past the goalkeeper as well. In the final minute before halftime, freshman Breanna Brumet took a nifty pass from sophomore Hannah O’Donnell and made it 5-0 Falcons. The Falcons continued to dominate the second half with goals by Jackie Kittredge and Hannah O’Donnell, both assisted by freshman Paige Verneuille, in the 70th and 72nd minute. Falcon goalkeepers Amber Hall and Valerie Ovordnikov combined for the shutout.
